Is amrit necessary in Sikhism?

I personally feels that baptism only adds to rifts and separations in religions. This is because baptized Sikhs are usually the ones who are regarded to have a higher ranking in socio-religious hierarchy. This basically means that baptized Sikhs are better Sikhs, but aren't we all god's children?
