Is it a myth that losing virginity hurts?

I'm just curious b/c before I ever had I always heard horror stories about how it's really painful and gruesome and the skin tears and all kinds of stuff which kinda scared me for a while lol. I lost my virginity to my bf at the time who I was with for 2 years and it didn't hurt at all. It was awkward though..actually it was numb feeling. I didn't really feel much of anything which is weird b/c he wasn't small at all, he was around 7-8 inches. It was in the morning time when I had just woken up so maybe thats why lol. But I was just wondering why so many people say it's really painful?
