What are some famous puppets?

I'm doing a research paper on puppets, and I need to find out about a famous, yet not very well-known, puppet. I can't do my research paper on, let's say, Kermit the Frog, Ms. Piggy, Elmo, or anything like that. I suppose that the puppet's would have to be from the 1700's or so. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
